Recalled Pet Food Kills Fewer Animals Than PETA

Recalled Pet Food Kills Fewer Animals Than PETA

I had not seen this article, someone posted it to a couple of the email lists I am on and I felt it was too good not to share...

We just came from a fascinating event at the National Press Club in Washington. At noon today, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) vice president Bruce Friedrich did his best to implicate IAMS (a well-known pet food company) in a product recall related to the deaths of a few hundred dogs and cats. We weren't terribly surprised when Friedrich had us thrown out of the building -- after all, we were there to remind the national media that PETA itself has killed far more animals than the tainted pet food. And in PETA’s case, it's on purpose.

We just came back from a visit to vet that cost over $100. Our dog has had internal bleeding. The only change was her dog food. It looks like she had little rocks in her poo...daily. Now on antibiotic because of the tears in her digestive tract. Also on Pepcid AC. We looked at her food, Fit and Trim. Dog swallows whole. Never been a real chewer. I tried to grind pieces of fit and trim in bowl to see what was inside. Many pieces did not grind with my full force pushing. Using bottom of pill bottle to smash. It has torn up her insides. Her poo looks like she is passing gravel. The only change we had make was the dog food. She used to eat the indoor little bites (Purina) and no problem. She has been bleeding over a month and we did not know the culprit.

FDA finally admits thousands of pets died -

Friends, I personally would be very surprised if these are the actual numbers. I would suspect that there are many more and the owners have no clue as to what either made their pet sick or killed their pet.

Lots of tidbits from this FDA release

And finally, an acknowledgment from the FDA that more than 16 pets may be dead.

All vegetable protein from China is being detained. It includes the following: Wheat Gluten, Rice Gluten, Rice Protein, Rice Protein Concentrate, Corn Gluten, Corn Gluten Meal, Corn By-Products, Soy Protein, Soy Gluten, Proteins (includes amino acids and protein hydrosylates), Mung Bean Protein.

* 1,950 cats and 2,200 dogs reported dead.
* FDA does not know the scope of the problem.
* Original source of toxins still not known.
* Firms got around Chinese inspection by saying it wasn't food.
* New standards for import use established.

Is Any Commercial Pet Food really SAFE???

This is an important question that needs to be thoughtfully considered.

Robert Jay Russell, Ph.D., President of the Coton de Tulear Club of America has been writting up information about the mass poisiioning of pet foods on the CTCA's CotonClub e-Zine. He has been pretty good at predicting just where this crisis would go and what potential pet foods would most likely be declaried deadly. Yesterday, he reported "Tonight, the U.S. government and the pet food industry achieved a new low that even I did not see coming.

It's not just the awful tragedy with contaminated ingredients but I have been doing alot of research that makes me believe pet foods are using many questionable ingredients that can be harmful or is harmful to pets! Ingredients that just does not need to be in pet foods. Sadly, I do not think there is a safe pet food whether Holistic, Organic, Natural, or otherwise!! I read alot of information from vets, vet hospitals, professors, etc before I decide and while many of those intelligent people disagree on what is the best pet food or what ingredients can harm our pet, I rather be safe than sorry! If a pet food ingredient has any chance at all of harming our pets, leave it out! Does not matter if it helps one thing with our pets if it hurts another. Just my opinion of course! I do not trust any of them anymore and with Menu Foods knowing about the foods harming pets for almost a month before they announced it makes me distrust them even more.

The Pet Food Recall List GROWS

Everyone is asking when it will end! Every day more and more pet foods are added to the growing list of recalled foods not safe to feed your pets!

NOTE: This is the sixth recall alert in the last 24 hours

American Nutrition is finally recalling their foods containing rice protein concentrate. The recall covers Costco’s Kirkland Signature Super Premium Canned Food, item # 38436, best buy dates of Aug. 21 08 to April 15 of 09.

I identified this company last week on other forums because they were the only pet food company out of Utah and ChemNutra had said one of the five companies they sold RCP to was in Utah. But oh, is American Nutrition in trouble. I predict they will not be able to recover from this one. ANYTHING made by them is going to be suspect.

Good News For A Change Fish Oil in veterinary medicine

Good News For A Change -
Fish Oil As A Veterinary Supplement for CRF Kidney Disease and other Inflammatory Problems

Hi Friends, I thought with all the posting about bad news involved with the Pet Food recalls I would post this article from Teresa Holladay and her Safe Pet Food Blog.

I have been wanting to write this post for quite some time but there has been too much recall news to keep up with. So I’m just MAKING myself write it. After reading this, you will want all of your pets, especially if they have illnesses, to be on fish oil.

I am a vegetarian and after learning about the broad health benefits of fish oil, I became a believer so yes, now I take a daily fish oil supplement. [I read an article about how it was used to help the Sago Mine survivor, which I will post this weekend for you — Wow — Written by the doctor who helped him].

But this post is about veterinary use!

My Pet Counts! Postcard Blitz

We along with Pet Connection.com and Doggie Bling.com are calling on all pet owners, parents, guardians who have lost a pet due to contaminated pet food to join us in a post card blitz to demonstrate the full scope of this pet food recall disaster.

The FDA continues to publicize only “16 confirmed deaths.” This number has often been repeated by the media. Reliable sources report that the number of pet deaths are and will be much higher - most likely in the thousands.

If you want your pet’s death to count for something good, please join the My Pet Counts! Post Card Blitz.

How can we do something about Purina and the Beneful crisis?

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

How can we do something about Purina and the Beneful crisis?

Friends, I am amazed at the amount of emails and phone calls we have been getting concerning Beneful dog food not being recalled yet and their stories of thier dogs getting very sick and even dying.

First of all, I want you to know that I know and fully understand what an emotional time this is for everyone and I can fully understand your frustration over the response or should I say the lack of response from Nestle/Purina. It also appears that the FDA has not initiated a recall in light of all of the evidence, much of which has been relayed by local FDA agents directly to dog owners.

Our friends at Doggiebling.com are being overwhelmed with emails and phone calls as well. " ( For the record, Ric received a call monday morning from an FDA agent who seemed very concerned about the situation. The agent said that he was new and had only received a few complaints relating to Purina products. Ric explained that this has been an ongoing problem and people understand that the FDA is aware of the situation. < There are FDA posts in our Forum dating back to February 6, 2007 >. The people just want the FDA to do their job and recall the Purina products that have been affecting dogs and other pets. Trust me when I say that we have been much nicer than most people towards the FDA's inaction) "

It seems that they too have had a large number of people call them and ask what they can do to help the fight against a company that is knowingly harming dogs. They have come with some excellent ideas for you to help get Purina's and the FDA's attention.

Plastics chemical can make animal feed appear more protein-rich

FDA: Pet food tainting might be intentional

Plastics chemical can make feed appear more protein-rich

What can I say? This speaks for itself...

Updated: 5:50 p.m. PT April 20, 2007

WASHINGTON - Imported ingredients used in recalled pet food may have been intentionally spiked with an industrial chemical to boost their apparent protein content, federal health officials suspect.

That’s one theory being pursued by the Food and Drug Administration as it investigates how the chemical, melamine, contaminated at least two ingredients used to make more than 100 brands of dog and cat foods.

Purina Not Interested?

From the emails and news I am getting about Purnia, they are not interested in all the calls and reports of sick and/or dying dogs eating their Beneful dog food.

Hi Jeannie,
I wanted to update you on what has been going on with Purina Beneful. I have contacted the FDA, who told me that they had recieved quite a number of complaints about Beneful. They took down my information and said they would be in touch, but refused to test my food as of yet. Beneful has not tested the sample of food I sent in to them. When I contacted them about it, they told me their policy does not allow them to conduct chemical testing on the food - and they would only be physically inspecting it for abnormalities, and possibly examining it under a microscope. They said they would have claims representative contact me, but that was 2 weeks ago and I have heard nothing.
I am at a loss of what to do about Purina. The company is refusing to take any responsibility for their clearly poisonous dog food. Based on the reports on your site, and their similarity to the sickness and death of my puppy, I am convinced Beneful killed him.
Thanks for any advice you can give me.
Elena

NATURAL BALANCE PULLS AN INGREDIENT SWITCHEROO?

Venison Formula
NATURAL BALANCE PULLS AN INGREDIENT SWITCHEROO?
I have been bombarded with a simple question lately... Is there ANYTHING safe I can feed my pets?

Many of you already know my answer to that... YES, dogs are carnivoures, what do carnivores eat? Raw Meat and Bones. RAW??????????? Yes, raw. At the very least do as your grandparents and great parents did and feed your dog a home cooked diet with NO grains. Okay, so on with the ingredient switcheroo at Natural Balance...

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wilbur-Ellis Co. said on Thursday it was voluntarily recalling all lots of a rice protein concentrate its feed division had shipped to pet-food manufacturers.

Wilbur-Ellis said it is urging all pet food manufacturers using rice protein concentrate supplied by it to recall any pet food that may be on supermarket shelves.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070419/ts_nm/wilburellis_petfood_dc_2

As word has spread today about the Natural Balance recall of foods containing rice protein concentrate, a few pet parents astutely observed that Natural Balance has changed their website's list of ingredients for the affected foods. Just a few short days ago, the suspect ingredient was not included among the ingredients listed on the Natural Balance website but, today, after the FDA announcement that melamine was found in the rice protein concentrate, the website was changed to add this ingredient.
