Chapter 9: Branch Out & Target Your Audience
One of the exceptional characteristics of the full-featured
Quikonnex publisher channel is the ability to create additional
channels, or subchannels.
One huge advantage of creating a subchannel is that just a minor
modification to the syndication code can allow you to share the
contents of just that subchannel. Can you say, "TARGETED"?!
Here's an example of how you might want to use subchannels.
My company actually owns multiple websites to promote several very
different businesses -
CarltonsCorner.com for Internet Related Resources
CarltonsPhoto.com for Original Photography products
CarltonsGifts.com for discounted gift and collectible items
WingsAndAPrayer.com
for angel-themed and inspirational items
WildWeaselDomains.com
for domain names, webhosting, site building, etc.
I have a main channel named
carltonscorner. My primary syndication
code points to that channel and provides automatic updates for
those who choose to use the syndication links I provide. I also
have a subchannel,
carltonscorner-gifts, which
I use to announce new arrivals and specials at CarltonsGifts.com.
I could also create a carltonscorner-photo, carltonscorner-domains,
carltonscorner-angels...and so on.
As each subchannel is established, I can create syndication link code
for that channel by changing the channel url in the link I provide to others.
Now you can't just let a channel "sit" and expect traffic. You must
produce or publish occasional value-added
content or articles. You can even post relevant articles written by other
authors and distributed through article submission services. Each time
an item is posted on Quikonnex, whether to a
main channel or subchannel, the weblogs are pinged, bringing attention
to that channel or subchannel. The key is to ALWAYS provide relevant
content to bring the desired audience to your channel.
Be wise about using your sidebar when running multiple channels.
Link to your other channels. Provide syndication code for each channel
and subchannel you own. Just create a separate category for this purpose.
There are many creative applications for subchannels, including the
publication of this Qbook! Be creative. Between the use of the
Categories mentioned earlier and Subchannels, you have a
tremendous set of tools to really target your content to a particular
audience and draw them to your channel or subchannel, hence bringing
more likely buyers to your specific product or service.
Creating a subchannel is easy too. Here's how to do it:
- Logon to your publisher area by going to your QuikView panel
and selecting QMember/Publisher Area from the dropdown
and entering your qname and password.
- Click on Channel Manager to expand the menu, then click on
Your Channels, which takes you to the Channel Manager Home page.
- Scroll down about 2/3 down the page to the "Your Settings" heading and
click the "Create A New Channel" link.
- Fill in the form, using the ? icon to get a description of each
field. Current fields include:
- Channel Name: The name you want to be seen in the channel
title bar and at the top of the channel site.
- Extension to Add to the Channel Qname: This is the extra
text added to the address of your channel. For
example, for my carltonscorner channel, I entered
gifts in this field. The subchannel becomes
carltonscorner-gifts.
- Channel Description is simply the text description of
your channel, which also appears in the title bar
at the top of your channel page.
- Choose Your Skin: As with the main channel, you can choose
the color for your site. This color will be applied to
the title bar, text links and some graphics on your
subchannel. You can choose an entirely different
color scheme for each channel and subchannel you
create. Coordinate them with your logo, graphics,
other websites, etc.
- Time Offset: The server on which Quikonnex is hosted
is in the US Eastern timezone. If you want your posts
to reflect a different timezone, enter the difference
in the number of hours between the US Eastern timezone
and your timezone.
- When you have completed your selections, click on the CREATE CHANNEL
icon to submit your request. The subchannel will be
available immediately from your Channel Manager Home page.
Note: If you want to change anything for this channel, click on the
SETTINGS link for that channel from the Channel Manager Home page.
You manage this subchannel the same way you would manage your main
channel. Customize the skins. Add a unique sidebar and logo.
Make it match your content.
Now you can segment your articles and more effectively target your audience.
If you're using subchannels, you may want to consider obtaining domain names
to shorten the link and give your subchannel a more professional image.
You can obtain domain names from
WildWeaselDomains.com and use the free Domain Forwarding feature
pointing to your subchannel. Use that .com domain name in all of your
advertising and links. It's just as good as having a professional,
hosted website.
Here's a piece of information that SHOULD BLOW YOU AWAY!...
Whether you're creating a channel or a subchannel, you can
SYNDICATE your ENTIRE WEBSITE.
You can create the entire site
with the WYSIWYG editor. All you need is the simple syndication
code to share the entire website. Think
about how powerful that could be.
