How Many Versions Are There?

RSS Versions: They are not the same
By Trina L.C. Schiller

At my last count, there were 9 different and completely incompatable versions of RSS. Newer versions are bound to crop up, as coders become aware of the limitless possibilites that this form of technology represents.

Let's look at some history.

In 1999, Netscape developed the first version of RSS, .90, which was designed to server as a news portal. This first version was an extemely complex system, and was quickly replaced by version .91, in an effort to simplfy things. However, Netscape lost interest in the program all together, and this newer version, .91, was picked up by a company called Userland Software. Userland Software saw the potential RSS represented, and set out to use it for web logging and other web based writing applications.

A third entity produced the version 1.0, which Userland didn't much care for, preferring to continue working with the simplification of .90.

Since that time, Userland has come out with many other versions of the system: .92, .93, .94, finally ending up with version 2.0. The introduction of the 2.0 version has made all of its predecessors obsolete. However, at least 85% of RSS feeds in operation are produced with one of the earlier versions.

And then there is ATOM. The newest alternative in RSS versions.

Are you confused yet? Are you sitting there wondering how on earth you're going to be able to keep all these versions straight, and what aggregator to use to read them with?

Let me help you out. The following are a list of links where you can read more detailed information on the different RSS versions.
